How to Give Neck Massage Using the Circular Movement Technique
Of the three
specific techniques used in a standard back and neck massage, the Circular
Movement techniques are used the most often throughout the process. Usually
they are referred to simply as "Frictions", but they are very
specific circular movements over small and targeted areas. Generally,
Effleurage opens and closes any massage, and this means that the application of
oils is not required to begin the transition into any Circular Movement technique.
Generally, the receiver is lying on their stomach and the provider will be to
the left or right of the receiver, working across and up the back. A common
Circular Movement begins with the application of light pressure with the
thumbs. These are then moved in circular motions, gradually deepening in the
amount of pressure applied. To transition to the next area the masseur or
masseuse must slowly release the pressure and glide their hands to the new area
and begin again. It is important to remember that as the pressure of the
movement increases the thumbs should move continually slower until it is time
to begin the process of transition into a new area.
When used in a
traditional neck and back massage the first Circular Movement is actually
called "Petri sage" and tends to be focused on the shoulder blades.
It works the muscles above the blades and in between them before transitioning
back into a focus on the spine. The next area to receive attention is the top
of the spine, and then circular motions are utilized to work all of the way
down to the base. The Circular Movement techniques will tend to comprise the
majority of a massage treatment of the back and the neck. If at any time the
receiver seems to tense up it is important to inquire if any particular
movement has caused them discomfort or pain. If they confirm that this is the
case, you must quickly transition into a less intense pressure with the thumbs.
To do so you must also generally quicken the pace at which the circular motion
is being "drawn" on the muscle, but do not stop at once as this can
cause a more intense discomfort than the slower transition. For more detail
